About us

Built for schools that want to stay in touch

Alumnis started with a simple question: why does every school lose touch with most of its alumni within five years of matric?

Our story

The records never kept up with the relationships

Every school has alumni who would gladly give back: a talk at career day, a bursary, a few hours mentoring a Grade 12. The goodwill is there. What's missing is a reliable way to find those people and reach them.

In most schools, alumni contact lists live in spreadsheets, old email inboxes and social media groups that nobody at the school controls. When a staff member leaves, the list often leaves with them.

Alumnis fixes that. It gives the school a register it owns, and gives alumni a reason to keep their details current. We built it in Johannesburg, for South African schools, with POPIA in mind from the first line of code.

Our mission

To keep every matric class connected to the school that shaped them.

We measure success by the reunions that happen, the mentors matched with learners and the alumni who come back to help.

What we believe

How we work with schools

Partners, not vendors

We work alongside your staff and old pupils' association. Your school's traditions and identity come first, and our software fits around them.

Relationships before fundraising

Alumni who feel connected choose to give back. We help you build that connection first and never push asks before people are ready.

Privacy by design

Consent is recorded for every alum. Each person controls what they share, and the school can show exactly who agreed to what, and when.

Simple enough for busy staff

School staff are stretched. Alumnis needs no training course, and we handle the data import and setup ourselves.

The team

Who's behind Alumnis

Richard Shearer

Richard Shearer

Co-Founder and lead developer

A Johannesburg-based developer with 25 years of experience building web and mobile systems for South African organisations. Richard brings that experience to a problem every school shares.

“I’ve spent 25 years building systems for South African organisations and I keep seeing the same thing. The people are willing, but the records fall apart. Schools feel this more than anyone. They shape a learner for five years, then lose track of them shortly after they leave. I built Alumnis so that every matric class keeps a way back to the school that shaped them.”

Matric years, houses, learners and old pupils' associations. Alumnis is built around how SA schools actually work.

POPIA from day one

Consent capture, access controls and the right to be forgotten are part of the solution, not an add-on.
